How to shop and dress like a Pro #10: New Outfits With Green Cardigan

Recently picked up two dresses and a green cardigan from Banana Republic’s final sale items. Great price and love the combinations! What do you think?

How to shop and dress like a Pro #9: Peplum Sweater With Dot Pants

The other day in the mall, I couldn’t help staring at Kate Hudson’s pose for Ann Taylor’s poster where she is wearing a black peplum hem sweater with jacquard mini shirt. I was very tempted to get the peplum hem sweater….and finally I got it. I paired it with slim chopped dot pants from Gap. When I shop to keep up with trends, I try not to go too far.  My feeling, peplum would not last long; therefore one is enough to keep up with the seasonal trend.
This was my first time trying the take pictures including face :). It was way harder than I thought.

How to shop and dress like a Pro #8: Work Week Outfits

Mixing and wearing different colors gives fresh look each day. I am not surprised that skinny jean with high boot is still favorite for this season. The combination is perfect for casual Friday. Add a blazer to give a slightly formal look.  If you do not own a blazer yet…start with black. It can go with anything –work or casual outfits.  My advice, before you buy an outfit, imagine what you can wear with? And if this fashion would last. You don’t want to end up with a wardrobe full of clothes that you could only wear once.

How to shop and dress like a Pro #7: Work Week Outfits

Here comes another week, it is time for my week 3 “work week outfits” posting. I am repeating the same outfits but with different match and contrast to demonstrate that oftentimes you could use the same piece for various combinations. I hope this will help you reorganize your wardrobe, and start making use of the pieces, which either forgot about or couldn’t think that they will go. As always, I would love to hear your feedback and ideas.

How to shop and dress like a Pro #5: Denim

Denim is a forever trend! 2-piece denim combination is back. Who does not own a pair of jeans? How about denim jacket or shirt?  I will be fine with the combination of denim shirt and jeans with contrasting colors. But, I don’t think I am quite ready for denim jacket with denim pants. Is this 80’s? This is just my personal preference. I tried to put two pieces together and I don’t think the combination is that appealing.

So, if you ask me, would I wear this combination? My answer is “no” for now. See below two pictures and you be the judge – what combination you like the best?
Denim Jacket
If you are looking for denim jacket…go to Gap. I bought mine many years ago and still wear it all the time in fall and spring. I wear it with almost everything except denim pants!

How to shop and dress like a Pro #4: Work Week Outfits

Work Week Outfits

I plan on posting “Work Week Outfits” for a few weeks. Subscribe to the blog, you will receive an email notification when I post something new. I hope this topic with a plenty of pictures would give you some ideas about dressing up for a work day. All of us go through this every morning – what to wear to work? I have nothing to wear. How would this go with that?

Colors are big this fall. I picked up a couple of pieces to add to my fall collection. No matter how much we like to follow trend, we should always look for deals. For example, I liked a couple tops and pants from Banana Republic. The pieces were not on sales.  Banana Republic has 40% off on a regular price for one item on Wednesday. I waited for Wednesday and picked one up each week. Also, the inventory turnover in most of the stores is fast. So, if they don’t have sale this week, go next week. If you couldn’t find the outfit you wanted, it is fine. They will come out with something new so fast that you don’t have to wait long. I bet you will like the new one even more. This happens to me quite often.

How to shop and dress like a Pro #3: Belts, Cardigans and Blazers

If you have been following my blogs, you might have noticed that I repeated belts, cardigans, and blazers many times with different outfits. I can’t emphasize enough that with a good collection of wardrobe you should be able to create any looks by mixing, contrasting and matching the pieces you already have. You don’t have to go out and look for an outfit to match each time you buy a new outfit. Shop like Pro! Having good collection of belts, cardigans and blazers could give you a number of diverse looks.

Shopping for belts is not hard. Pick colors and designs that are in fashion. Orange, yellow, green, red and blue are for this fall. Also, having classics like black, brown, gold and silver are handy for any combinations. Besides colors, a big question in regards to cardigan and blazer is that how to shop for a perfect fitted cardigan or blazer. The trick to shop for cardigan is that if you would wear it as a top layer, the sleeves of the cardigan should fit your arms/hands tightly. Loose/big cardigan does not do the trick when wore as a top layer. The waist length blazer should fit the waist, and should give you shape. It is usually pretty obvious if the blazer is not a right fit. Sometimes the shape is right, but the sleeves are too short or too long. Of course, you could get alteration but oftentimes alteration is quite costly. You could wear the blazer by pushing up the sleeves to 3 quarter of your arms and that would do the trick.
Belts, Cardigans, and Blazers
Navy blue shift business casual dress from Banana Republic , I got it for $50.39 (regular price $130, sale at $79.99 with 30% off and another 10% off). It is a simple dress with nice fitted shape. You could wear it with just a simple necklace, or you could add a belt, a cardigan, or a blazer to add little color. Any colors would do as long as we do not wear the same color piece on it. Recall from my first post….avoiding black on black.
Belts, Cardigans, and Blazers

White casual dress from Gap, I got it for $34.29 (regular price $59.50, sale at $48.99 with 30%). Love the dress. The dress has some lace print on it. It is a beautiful dress for casual day when you don’t feel like wearing pants or jean. Dress it with a cardigan, blazer and denim jacket if you do not feel like wearing spaghetti strap dress or it is more age appropriate for you.
Casual Outfit

Last Saturday, I wore the dress with a denim jacket, a “grey multi” belt from Loft and a pair of “grey multi” ballet flat shoes from Banana Republic to a friend BBQ get together. In term of handbag, I like to carry a satchel handbag (red satchel handbag from Banana Republic) when I have casual outfit on. Satchel handbag gives sophisticated look. Often time sophisticated and causal looks complement each other. There is no rule that casual has to go with casual – contrasting pieces would give you a completely different and desired look.
